The journal Microbial Ecology was founded more than 50 years ago by Dr. Ralph Mitchell, Gordon McKay Professor of Applied Biology at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. The journal has evolved to become a premier location for the presentation of manuscripts that represent advances in the field of microbial ecology. Microbes and environments - LIBRIS

Congratulations to the winners of the FEMS Microbiology Ecology Article Award, Megan M Morris, Natalie J Frixione, Alexander C Burkert, Elizabeth A Dinsdale, and Rachel L Vannette for their paper 'Microbial abundance, composition, and function in nectar are shaped by flower visitor identity'. Over recent years, the journal Microbial Ecology has been revamped to provide an international forum for the presentation of high-quality scientific investigations into microbial ecology, and how microorganisms interact with their biotic and abiotic environments, with each other as well as with their neighbors and hosts. However, studies investigating host-microbe interactions in the field of ecology and evolution are dominated by 16S and ITS amplicon sequencing. While amplicon sequencing is a useful tool for describing microbial community composition, it is limited in its ability to quantify the function(s) performed by members of those communities. Tiziano Bo, Massimo Cammarata, Manuel Jesús López-Rodríguez, José Manuel Tierno de Figueroa, Marco Baltieri, Paolo Varese, Stefano Fenoglio The influence of water quality and macroinvertebrate colonization on the breakdown process of native and exotic leaf types in sub-alpine stream, Journal of Freshwater Ecology 29, no.2 2 (Jan 2014): 159 This is particularly relevant for microbial ecology, in which species are hard to define, horizontal gene transfer is rife and taxonomy is often blurred. Understanding how membership within complex and dynamic microbial communities relates to the function of that community is one of the key challenges facing microbial ecology (Widder et al. 2016).
